Nigerian Government Halts NAFDAC's Enforcement of Sachet Alcohol Ban

The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed NAFDAC to suspend the enforcement of a proposed ban on 200ml sachet alcohol and pet bottle alcohol products. This decision follows a joint intervention by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the National Security Adviser, citing security implications and the absence of a fully implemented national alcohol policy.

The government emphasized the need for a harmonized policy framework before enforcing the ban to prevent economic disruptions, job losses, and potential security risks. The suspension covers the sealing of factories and warehouses, which the government described as a de facto ban causing economic disruptions.

The decision came after consultations with various stakeholders, including the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drug Administration and Control, highlighting concerns about premature enforcement without proper policy coordination. The government assured stakeholders of a final decision after further consultations to safeguard public health, economic stability, and national security.
