Court to Rule on Bail for Alleged Cocaine Smuggler

Justice Friday Ogazi of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, is set to deliver a ruling on September 9, 2026, concerning the bail application of Abugu Oliver Ikechukwu, a Nigerian returnee from Brazil. Ikechukwu has been arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for allegedly smuggling 6.1 kilograms of cocaine into Nigeria.

The prosecution, represented by Abu Ibrahim, stated that Ikechukwu was intercepted on June 11, 2026, at Gate 2 of the Arrival Hall, Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja, Lagos, during the inward clearance of passengers from an Ethiopian Airlines flight arriving from Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The NDLEA informed the court that the cocaine was concealed in towels and clothing items to avoid detection.

The charge against Ikechukwu is based on Section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Ikechukwu pleaded not guilty, leading the prosecution to request a trial date and remand him in a correctional facility pending trial.
