Nigerian Military Concludes Investigation, Indicts Officers in Alleged Coup Plot

The Nigerian military has wrapped up its investigation into an alleged coup plot targeting the government led by Bola Tinubu. Sixteen military officers were arrested in October 2025 on allegations of engaging in acts of indiscipline and violating service regulations, including attempting to overthrow the federal government.

In a statement released on January 26, 2026, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, announced the findings of the investigation. The report implicated the officers in activities inconsistent with ethical and professional military standards, such as attempting to undermine constitutional authority.

The accused officers will face trial before a military judicial panel in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and service laws.
