Peter Obi Sues Kenneth Okonkwo for ₦8 Billion Defamation

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has officially served a writ of summons to actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo in a defamation lawsuit filed in the High Court of Anambra State, Onitsha Judicial Division. The legal action, initiated on June 25, 2026, seeks ₦8 billion in damages for allegedly defamatory statements made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channel Television's Sunrise Daily program on June 8, 2026.

Following the broadcast, these comments circulated on social media, prompting Obi to pursue legal action through his counsel, Chief Alex Ejesiem, SAN of Madiba Chamber, Awka, Anambra State. Obi claims that Okonkwo's remarks, which were later uploaded to Channel Television's YouTube platform, were false, malicious, and damaging to his character and public image.

The suit demands ₦5 billion in general damages for reputational harm, ₦2 billion in aggravated damages, and ₦1 billion in exemplary damages. Additionally, Obi seeks a court order for Okonkwo to retract his statements and remove related content from social media platforms.
