Coroner's Inquest into Adichie's Son's Death Begins

The coroner's inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Eseg, son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Eseg, began at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos.

The preliminary session, held on January 10, 2026, was convened to establish the framework for the inquiry into the child's death on January 7, 2026, after being admitted to Euracar Multi-Specialist Hospital. The family alleges gross medical negligence, including possible overdosing and improper administration of propofol during medical procedures.

Prof. Kemi Pinheiro, representing the family, emphasized the need for an autopsy and the preservation of electronic evidence, including CCTV footage and medical records.

The court has directed parties to file witness statements by the next adjournment date, set for April 14, 2026. The Attorney General of Lagos State has initiated the inquest due to public concern surrounding the circumstances of the child's death.
