Inquest Opens into Chimamanda Adichie’s Son's Death

The Lagos State coroner's court has initiated an inquest into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi Eseg, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie. Nkanu died in January following complications from a medical procedure at Euracar multi-specialist hospital.

The family, represented by senior advocate Kemi Pinheiro, claims that Nkanu's death resulted from medical negligence, citing issues such as inadequate monitoring, improper dosing of propofol, lack of supplemental oxygen, insufficient medical staff, and delayed responses to his deteriorating condition. They question whether informed consent was properly obtained.

Euracar has denied any wrongdoing, stating that Nkanu was critically ill upon referral for the procedure, which followed established clinic protocols. The Lagos State government has intervened, directing health facilities to monitor accreditation standards, with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) reviewing the case.

During a preliminary court session, Magistrate Atinuk Adetunji confirmed the inquest request by Lagos State Attorney General Lawal Pedro, intending to determine if a full inquest and autopsy are warranted. The family plans to present evidence of alleged gross medical negligence, including overdosing and misdiagnosis, and intends to call five independent medical experts.

The case has been adjourned until April 14, 2026.
