Kanu Opts to Defend Himself in Alleged Terrorism Trial, Legal Team Withdraws

The trial of Kanu, the self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on terrorism charges that began in 2015 has taken a new turn as he opts to defend himself. Kanu's lead counsel unexpectedly withdrew from the case, leading to Kanu representing himself in court.

The trial, which has passed through several courts including the Supreme Court, has now entered the defense phase. Kanu's decision to defend himself has raised concerns, especially after his legal team's withdrawal.

The trial has been ongoing since Kanu's arrest in Kenya in June 2021 and subsequent extradition to Nigeria.
