Almajiri Commission Allocates N8.4bn for Road Projects

The Almajiri Commission has earmarked N8.4 billion for road projects as part of its 2026 budget, which includes N22.82 billion in total, comprising N21.68 billion for capital expenditure and N1.14 billion for recurrent expenditure. The commission, established by an act of Parliament on May 27, 2023, aims to tackle challenges faced by school children, reduce illiteracy, and integrate formal and Qur'anic education.

The budget allocates N1.4 billion for the rehabilitation and construction of various roads in Ogun State, including the Eyinni High School to Lusada Junction Road and others. In Katsina State, N1.05 billion is allocated for constructing internal roads, while Ekiti State receives N700 million for medical equipment and solar street lights.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the appropriateness of the commission executing road construction, as this falls outside its statutory responsibilities, which primarily focus on educational initiatives.
