Amasiri Community Appeals to ICC and UN Over Rights Violations

The Amasiri Community in Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, has submitted a petition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the United Nations (UN) on February 9, 2026, alleging severe human rights violations by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru. The petition claims that the governor ordered military invasions in Amasiri, resulting in extrajudicial killings, destruction of homes, looting of property, and the shutdown of schools to prevent children from registering for national examinations.

The community asserts that these actions stem from a long-standing boundary crisis with Oso Community, which has led to retaliatory violence. The petition highlights the killing of four individuals and claims that the military operations have intensified, with reports of razing ancestral homes and seizing sacred artifacts.

The Amasiri Community seeks urgent intervention to allow children to return to school and demands an impartial investigation into the alleged killings. They also call for international accountability and potential visa restrictions against the governor by the UK, EU, and Canada.
