Amnesty International Warns Against State Repression of Journalists

Amnesty International raises concerns over the increasing weaponization of laws to suppress press freedom in Nigeria. The organization warns that state authorities are using legal measures to intimidate and silence journalists.

In a presentation in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, legal practitioner Abdul Mahmud highlighted recent incidents of arrests and intimidation targeting journalists. Mahmud cited cases such as the disappearance of investigative journalist Daniel Ojukwu and the detention of publisher Dayo Aiyetan and reporter Nurudeen Akewushola.

These incidents reflect a worrying trend of using arrests and intimidation to stifle investigative journalism and dissent. Amnesty International calls for the protection of press freedom and the prevention of state-sponsored repression against journalists.
