INEC Promises Flawless 2027 Elections in Nigeria

Professor Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stated during a town hall meeting in Abuja that the 2027 elections will be the best in Nigeria's history, promising no technical glitches. He announced that the presidential national assembly elections will take place on January 16, 2027, followed by the governorship and state house assembly elections on February 6, 2027.

This schedule was adjusted following President Bola Tinubu's assent to the amended Electoral Act of 2026. Amupitan highlighted the need for thorough testing of the electoral transmission infrastructure to prevent past technical setbacks, mentioning a mock presidential exercise planned ahead of the elections.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by INEC, particularly in logistics and result management, and emphasized the importance of enhancing transparency and credibility in the electoral process. Amupitan also noted that the reforms aim to strengthen political party oversight and reduce pre-election disputes, thereby increasing public confidence in Nigeria's democratic process.
