INEC Chairman Amupitan Urges Preparedness for 2027 Elections

Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), called on electoral officers in South-West Nigeria to tackle the challenges of the 2027 general elections with increased commitment, discipline, and preparedness. This appeal was made on Monday during the opening of the South-West zonal interaction meeting and readiness assessment in Lagos, marking the first phase of INEC’s six-zone national tour to evaluate its operational readiness for the upcoming elections.

Amupitan stressed the importance of confronting these challenges directly and highlighted lessons learned from recent off-cycle elections, including the Anambra governorship election, the Federal Capital Territory area council election, and the Osun governorship election, as critical for improving INEC's processes. He noted that the success of elections is determined at the operational level and encouraged officers to identify challenges and propose solutions.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state House of Assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027.
