IGP and INEC Chair Discuss Security for Upcoming Elections

On May 6, 2023, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) met with Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), at the INEC headquarters in Abuja to discuss security measures for the forthcoming Ekiti and Osun governorship elections and the 2027 general elections. The meeting focused on ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process, particularly in light of current security challenges in Nigeria.

The IGP outlined strategies to address potential threats, including political violence and voter intimidation. He emphasized the need for early preparation and specialized training for security personnel.

Amupitan highlighted the importance of protecting vulnerable voters, including internally displaced persons and persons with disabilities, to ensure their participation without fear of intimidation. The IGP assured that police officers deployed for election duties would be trained to uphold human rights and maintain professional conduct.
