INEC Chairman Amupitan Calls for Media Support Ahead of 2027

On Wednesday, during a courtesy visit with the executive committee of the INEC Press Corps in Abuja, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), admitted that the commission faces a significant trust deficit among Nigerian citizens.

He called on the media to assist in reshaping narratives in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This meeting marked the first formal interaction between Amupitan and the leadership of the press corps since his appointment in late 2025.

He commended the journalism profession for its support and emphasized the need for transparency in the electoral process, especially given the skepticism often held by Nigerian voters. Segun Ojumu, leading the press corps delegation, praised the transparent manner in which Amupitan has managed the commission since assuming office.

He noted the logistical challenges of Nigerian elections and the necessity for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure successful preparations for upcoming high-stakes elections, particularly following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.
