INEC Seeks Media Support to Restore Trust in Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has sought media partnership to restore public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process, acknowledging a significant trust deficit.

During a recent visit to the INEC Press Corps in Abuja, Amupitan emphasized the need for journalists to actively reshape public perception of the commission. He commended the press for their coverage of electoral activities and noted that credible information dissemination is crucial for strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria, which has a population of approximately 200 million.

Segun Ojumu, the Chairman of the INEC Press Corps, praised Amupitan's leadership and the commission's transparency. The meeting also addressed the logistical challenges of conducting elections in Nigeria, highlighting the need for collaboration among stakeholders, including media, security agencies, and civil society groups.

INEC is intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections, with presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, and governorship elections on February 6, 2027.
