Anakwue Advocates for Heart-Healthy Nigeria in Lecture

Professor Raphael Anakwue delivered the 249th Inaugural Lecture at the University of Nigeria, titled “Beyond Traditional Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Toxic Shadows and the Heart-Habitat Interface.” The lecture examined contemporary cardiovascular health, challenging traditional assumptions and emphasizing the need for sound medicine, safer environments, and smarter policies to protect heart health. Anakwue, a distinguished physician, progressed from medical training at the University of Nigeria to a professorial role, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death globally and are increasingly prevalent in Africa, causing significant disability and premature mortality. The financial burden of treatment can deplete family savings, making prevention essential.

The lecture argued that cardiovascular medicine must extend beyond traditional clinical measures, which include blood-pressure control and cholesterol reduction, to address less visible risk factors such as pollution and hazardous environments that exacerbate cardiovascular issues.
