US Imposes 12.5% Tariff on Nigerian Imports

The United States has announced a 12.5% tariff on imports from Nigeria, citing the country's inadequate measures against the importation of goods produced with forced labor. This tariff, imposed by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), is part of a broader trade measure affecting 60 economies and follows extensive investigations into labor practices.

Analysts warn that this tariff will undermine Nigeria's export competitiveness, squeeze businesses, and weaken foreign exchange earnings, particularly affecting small businesses and manufacturers aiming for the US market. The USTR's investigations, which began in May 2026, included over 1,600 submissions and consultations with more than 45 governments.

Countries like India, Indonesia, and the UK will face a lower tariff of 10% due to their enforcement of import bans on forced labor goods. The USTR stated that Nigeria's exports will be subject to the 12.5% tariff, with specific exemptions outlined in the Federal Register notice.
