US Imposes Tariffs on Nigeria Over Forced Labor Claims

The Office of the United States Trade Representative announced new tariffs on imports from 60 economies, including Nigeria, due to their failure to prohibit the importation of goods produced with forced labor. The tariffs, which range from 10% to 12.5%, were announced on Thursday and are based on investigations initiated in May 2026 under Section 301 of the Trade Act.

The USTR received over 1,600 public submissions, conducted hearings with more than 100 witnesses, and consulted over 45 governments before implementing these tariffs. Nigeria will face a 12.5% tariff, while countries that have committed to banning imports linked to forced labor will incur a lower tariff of 10%.

Certain products may be exempt from these tariffs, as reported by PUNCH Online.
