Anambra State Governor Reopens Onitsha Market After Closure

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has directed the reopening of Onitsha main market on Monday, February 2, 2026, after a week-long closure. The closure was initiated due to traders' failure to comply with state government directives, including a sit-at-home order.

Governor Soludo, accompanied by top government officials and security personnel, conducted a spot assessment of the market before ordering its closure extension until traders complied. The Anambra State Commission of Information and Law Enforcement announced the end of the closure period, urging traders to resume normal business activities.

The governor emphasized the need for maximum security and encouraged residents to report security concerns via the emergency line 5111. Civil servants and teachers were reminded of the pro-rata salary policy on no-work Mondays, with parents cautioned to ensure their children attend school to avoid sanctions.
