Anambra Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures in Onitsha

The Anambra State Government has initiated the demolition of illegal structures at Onitsha Main Market, marking the beginning of a long-planned enforcement exercise to restore the market's approved layout and alleviate congestion. This operation, carried out by the Onitsha North Local Government Council, aims to enhance trade activities within the area.

The demolition follows several notices issued to traders occupying illegal structures, with the first formal notice dated February 26, 2026. Hon.

Anthony Nwora, the chairman of Onitsha North Local Government, reminded affected structure owners of the deadline for compliance, which was initially set for February 14, 2026, and later extended to February 28, 2026. The council plans to commence demolition on March 1, 2026, advising traders to remove their belongings before this date.

This exercise is part of broader efforts to restore order and improve commercial activities in one of West Africa's largest markets, which has faced recurring issues related to safety and unapproved structures.
