Anambra Government Urges Peter Obi to Withdraw from 2027 Race

The Anambra State Government has publicly challenged former governor Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, citing accusations of broken campaign promises related to the state's debt and the timely payment of workers' salaries. In a statement from the state's New Media Office, the government questioned when Obi would exit the presidential campaign, recalling his pledge to resign if it was proven he left Anambra in debt.

The government claims that Obi, who served as governor until 2014, left office with outstanding liabilities and released a letter dated April 25, 2006, allegedly signed by Chuks Iloegbunam, Obi's Chief of Staff, which appealed for the payment of salary arrears owed to Anambra State Water Corporation workers. The letter indicated that the corporation's monthly salary bill was approximately 15 million naira, with the last payment made in February.

The government also alleged that eight external borrowings from Obi's administration remain unpaid, totaling 127.4 billion naira as of June 30, 2026. In response, Obi has rejected these claims, stating that his administration cleared over 35 billion naira in historical gratuities and left without any outstanding salaries, pensions, or contractor liabilities.
