Anglican Synod Advocates Drug Testing for Public Officials

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, convened its 15th General Synod from September 14 to September 18, 2026, at Our Saviour’s Church, Ikenne, Diocese of Remo, Ogun State. The Synod, led by Archbishop Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, issued a communiqué advocating for a constitutional amendment to mandate drug and substance-abuse testing for all public officers and candidates for elective or appointive positions.

This initiative responds to the rising issues of drug trafficking and substance abuse in Nigeria, particularly among youth, which the Synod linked to increased violent crime and insecurity. The communiqué also called for enhanced collaboration among government, schools, families, and communities to combat these issues.

Additionally, the Synod addressed broader concerns, including national unity, the upcoming 2027 general elections, and the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure credible elections. The Synod urged government action on insecurity and food security, recommending measures to support farmers and restore agricultural stability.
