Anthony Taylor Retires from Elite Refereeing Career

Anthony Taylor, a distinguished referee, announced his retirement from elite refereeing on Tuesday, concluding a career that spanned more than two decades and included officiating 831 matches. The 47-year-old's final appointment was at the 2026 World Cup, where he officiated the round-of-16 match between Portugal and Spain in the United States.

Taylor expressed that officiating at the elite level was a privilege but noted the intense pressure and constant scrutiny involved. He has spent 16 seasons in the Premier League, overseeing 432 matches, and has officiated every major domestic cup final, including the FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, the League Cup final in 2015, the Community Shield in 2015, and the Championship playoff final in 2018.

Taylor was recognized as one of England's leading referees, serving on the FIFA International List for 14 years and officiating at two World Cups (2022 and 2026), two European Championships (2020 and 2024), and two FIFA Club World Cups (2022 and 2025).
