Customs Seize N3.39bn Codeine at Apapa Port

The Nigeria Customs Service, under the Apapa Area Command, seized codeine valued at N3.39 billion, hidden in household utensils at Apapa Port. The operation took place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Chief Superintendent Isah Sulaiman announced the seizure, which involved two containers containing a total of 3,398 cartons and 339,800 bottles of codeine syrup. The containers were carefully concealed within household items, including pearl plates and insulated casseroles.

The registered numbers of the containers were MRKU 3816476 and TGBU 5399178. The seizure reflects a cumulative duty paid value of N3.398 billion.

This operation follows a recent visit by the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, who emphasized that the port is no longer a playground for smugglers. Emmanuel Oshoba, the command area controller, reiterated the commitment to protecting public health and safeguarding national security through intelligence-led enforcement strategies.
