FCT Council Elections Face Intimidation and Low Turnout

The recent council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) faced significant challenges, including low voter turnout and widespread allegations of vote buying and intimidation. Residents expressed disillusionment with the electoral process, citing a lack of trust in the electoral system.

Reports highlighted that in areas such as Gwagwalada and Bwari, political party agents were accused of engaging in corrupt practices, with vote buying amounts ranging from N500 to N3,000. Violence erupted in several polling units, particularly in Bwari, where voters fled due to confrontations.

Allegations surfaced against the All Progressives Congress (APC) for intimidating voters, with claims that the Minister of FCT, Nysem Wike, was involved in these actions. Observers noted that the electoral process was overshadowed by logistical failures and technical malfunctions, leading to disenfranchisement.

The situation was further complicated by sporadic violence and reports of harassment against journalists covering the elections.
