Court Dismisses Suit on Osun LG Chairmen's Tenure

The Federal High Court in Osun State, presided over by Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi, ruled on a suit (No. FHC/OS/CS/147/2025) that sought to extend the tenure of local government chairmen and councillors elected on October 15, 2022, during the administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
The court declared that their three-year tenure would end in October 2025. Following the ruling, Governor Ademola Adeleke dismissed the request for tenure elongation, stating that the court found no legal basis for the case.
Adeleke instructed the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to ensure that the current chairmen do not occupy council secretariats illegally. The All Progressives Congress (APC), represented by spokesperson Kola Olabisi, criticized the judgment, claiming it could annul elections conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission on February 22, 2025.
The chairmen's counsel, Muhydeen Adeoy, filed a notice of appeal on June 16, 2026, raising six grounds for appeal against the lower court's decision.
