APC Governors Reject Wike's Rainbow Coalition Ahead of 2027 Race

Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress confronts an internal split between its governors and Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, over a political alliance called the Rainbow Coalition. APC governors convened Monday evening in Abuja under Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma's leadership and formally rejected this coalition, contending it endangers President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's electoral prospects in 2027.

These governors have pledged their backing exclusively to candidates fielded by the APC in all electoral contests. Wike conceived the Rainbow Coalition to unite opposition politicians who support Tinubu's presidential drive while maintaining their standing in their respective parties for contests outside the presidency.

He has defended this structure as compatible with allegiance to the president, arguing that politicians belonging to other parties can advocate for Tinubu's candidacy while serving their own party interests. The minister has criticized the Progressives Governors Forum's strategy, questioning how governors might champion their party's nominees simultaneously with demonstrating commitment toward the president.

Party leadership at the national level seeks to resolve this dispute. The APC's top echelon worries that public disagreement may damage Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign and obstruct efforts to effectively mobilize voters.

Speaking publicly, Ima Niboro of the APC Presidential Campaign Council urged both Wike and the governors to cease their quarrel and focus on organizing at the grassroots level to generate support for the president. The heart of the disagreement lies in whether APC governors should confine their political engagement exclusively to their party's nominees or permit some flexibility for politicians from rival parties backing Tinubu.

The governors have decided to maintain strict party loyalty across all contests, while Wike contends that such restrictions have no rational basis and unnecessarily limit opportunities to forge coalitions in support of the president's re-election.
