APC State Chapters Reject Wike's Rainbow Coalition, Demand Party Defection

Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, faces growing pressure from across All Progressives Congress state structures to abandon his Rainbow Coalition framework and formally join the APC. The coalition, which Wike has promoted as a mechanism to support President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027 while maintaining political flexibility on other races, has drawn sharp rebuke from party officials who view it as politically incoherent.

Party chairmen from multiple states have argued that Wike cannot credibly back Tinubu's presidential ambitions while remaining a Peoples Democratic Party member. They contend that his continued PDP membership creates ambiguity about his true political alignment and that genuine commitment to the administration requires full party membership.

Some APC chapters have signaled willingness to accept Wike if he formally defects, while others have outright rejected the coalition framework. The Imo State APC took the confrontation further by labeling Wike a threat to Nigeria's democracy because of his support for Tinubu's re-election outside formal party structures.

This characterization prompted swift responses from Wike's media team and the Imo State PDP, who reversed the accusation and described the APC as the genuine threat to democratic principles. The PDP position argued that democracy inherently permits citizens to make political choices based on credibility rather than rigid party loyalty.

The dispute underscores a fundamental tension within Tinubu's political coalition: whether supporters must operate through formal APC membership or whether alternative arrangements can exist to mobilize backing for the president. Wike's arrangement, which would allow him to support the administration while potentially backing non-APC candidates in state and local contests, directly contradicts the unified party structure that APC leadership has prioritized since the national leadership retreat in Borno State.
