APC PCC Demands Clarity on Atiku's Fuel Subsidy Proposal

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC) has requested Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to elucidate the legal, fiscal, and operational framework of his proposed fuel subsidy. This demand was articulated by the Council's Spokesperson, Dele Alake, in Abuja following Abubakar's advocacy for targeted support for locally refined petroleum products.

The APC-PCC raised concerns regarding how government support to domestic refiners would lead to reduced pump prices under the current petroleum-sector framework. They asked Abubakar to clarify whether refiners receiving the subsidy would be mandated to sell petrol at specific prices and to identify the legal framework for such conditions.

Additionally, they inquired about the projected costs, funding sources, and safeguards against issues like smuggling and fraudulent claims. The Council also noted that any proposal involving preferential pricing for crude oil could impact revenue for the Federation and should be transparently costed, questioning if amendments to the Petroleum Industry Act would be necessary for implementation.
