APC Senator Proposes 16-Year Tenure for Nigeria's Presidency

APC Senator Kenneth Ez, who serves as the chairman of the Senate Committee, has called for a nationwide debate on replacing Nigeria's current two-term, four-year presidential cycle with a single 16-year tenure. He made this announcement on Monday while addressing journalists in Ohigbo, Amagu, Ezza South LGA, arguing that frequent electoral cycles undermine policy continuity and slow national development.

Ez stated that the current system forces governments to shift focus to re-election campaigns, leading to abandoned projects and policies that do not mature. He proposed scrapping the two-term structure to favor a single extended tenure, which he believes would allow for long-term reforms in critical sectors such as power, infrastructure, agriculture, and fiscal policy.

Ez defended recent economic measures, including the removal of fuel subsidies, as necessary for long-term stability. He acknowledged that constitutional amendments require approval from the National Assembly and state legislatures, stressing the importance of a transparent and participatory process in reform discussions.
