APC Considers Consensus Candidates for 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly weighing consensus candidates for the upcoming governorship elections in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states scheduled for 2027. A meeting hosted by President Bola Tinubu included Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 governors, focusing on strategies for the elections.

Sources indicate that Lagos stakeholders favor Olamilekan Adeola, a senator representing Ogun West, for the governorship ticket. In Oyo, Sharafadeen Alli is considered a strong candidate, backed by influential figures like Rashidi Ladoja.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set the presidential and national assembly elections for January 16, 2027, with governorship elections on February 6, 2027. The APC traditionally prefers a consensus model for candidate selection, which is believed to produce widely accepted candidates.

However, there are reports of internal conflicts, particularly in Ogun state, where Adeola's emergence may conflict with the interests of current Governor Dapo Abiodun.
