Uba Sani's Education Reforms Target Out-of-School Children

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has taken decisive action to address the out-of-school children crisis, viewing it as an urgent issue rather than an inherited problem. His administration has allocated the largest budget share to education for three consecutive years, with 25% in 2024, 26.14% in 2025, and 25% of the N985.9 billion budget in 2026.

Key reforms include halving tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions, raising the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65, and committing to recruit 2,000 primary school teachers annually. The state has constructed or renovated thousands of classrooms and provided essential learning materials.

Recognizing that economic constraints are a significant barrier to education, Sani's administration has prioritized the Reaching Out-of-School Children Project, valued at $62.8 million, which aims to enroll 100,000 out-of-school children across all 23 local government areas. This initiative combines state funding with grants and technical support, focusing on understanding and removing barriers to education.
