Jimoh Ibrahim Defends Tinubu's Absence at UNGA

Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the criticism regarding President Bola Tinubu's absence from the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Tinubu is currently on annual leave and has appointed Vice-President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria's delegation in New York.

During an appearance on the Television Continental program "Beyond The Headline," Ibrahim argued that Tinubu's absence should not be viewed negatively, as many other world leaders also did not attend in person. He questioned the necessity of Tinubu making a trip for a mere 15-minute speech, emphasizing that Shettima has effectively engaged in high-level meetings and with Nigerians in the diaspora.

Ibrahim noted that 60 percent of the speaking list consisted of foreign affairs ministers and vice-presidents, suggesting that Tinubu's presence was not essential. He also highlighted Nigeria's prominent position at UNGA, asserting that the country is seated in a significant position compared to others.
