Argungu Fishing Festival 2026 Launches in Kebbi, Nigeria

The Argungu International Fishing Festival 2026 officially began in Kebbi, Nigeria, drawing an estimated 40,000 registered fishermen and thousands of tourists and culture enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond. The festival, which dates back to 1934, is rooted in older traditions and was introduced to mark peace in the Sokoto Caliphate during the Kebbi Kingdom era.

The event features a carefully choreographed opening that quickly turned dramatic as a large number of fishermen surged towards the river ahead of the formal commencement, which was anticipated with excitement. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was expected to attend, with spectators gathering as early as 7:00 AM to witness the electrifying atmosphere.

The sheer scale of the crowd briefly overwhelmed security personnel, who worked to restore order. Beyond fishing competitions, the festival includes traditional music, dance, wrestling contests, and art craft exhibits, serving as a major boost for local tourism and commerce, transforming Argungu into a bustling hub of activity during the festival.
