Nigerian Army Arrests 14 Suspected Oil Thieves in Lagos

On April 16, 2026, the Nigerian Army conducted a successful operation in Lagos, resulting in the arrest of 14 suspected oil thieves. The operation was initiated based on credible intelligence regarding illegal bunkering activities around the Dangote Refinery.

Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, acting as the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, reported that the suspects were constructing illegal pipelines connected to high-sea tankers and were found attempting to siphon petroleum products. During the raid, which took place at approximately 1:30 AM, the troops overpowered the suspects who attempted to flee.

Items recovered included a tanker truck loaded with siphoned petroleum products, a Lexus Highlander SUV (registered number APP 67 JQ Lagos), a Ford Hilux vehicle (registered number 117 FST Lagos), a 40-horsepower pump machine, a boat engine, and a large quantity of industrial hosepipe among other bunkering equipment. The arrested suspects and recovered items are currently in military custody, and preliminary investigations are underway for appropriate prosecution under existing laws.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to tackling crude oil theft, which poses a significant threat to the nation's economy and infrastructure.
