INEC Unveils Timetable for 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the timetable for the 2027 general elections, as mandated by the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022. The presidential election is set for February 20, 2027, followed by the National Assembly and governorship elections on March 6, 2027.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan announced this during a press conference in Abuja, highlighting the need for adequate time to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

The commission has proposed a budget of N873.78 billion to conduct the elections, which includes costs for electoral operations, administration, technology, and miscellaneous provisions. A significant focus is on technological upgrades to enhance voter accreditation and data security, with N162.5 billion earmarked for ICT improvements.

The announcement has prompted discussions among stakeholders regarding the implications for Nigeria's democratic process and the need for legislative consideration.
