INEC Plans Nationwide Mock Election for 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Joash Amupitan, has announced plans to conduct a nationwide mock election as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections. This mock election aims to test the result transmission infrastructure to avoid the technical challenges experienced in previous elections.

The presidential election is now scheduled for January 16, 2027, with the governorship and state assembly elections set for February 6, 2027. This change follows a recent adjustment to the electoral timeline in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

During a town hall meeting, Amupitan emphasized the importance of thoroughly testing electoral technology, including the bimodal voter accreditation system, to ensure seamless result transmission during the elections. He expressed confidence that the technical glitches experienced during the 2023 presidential election would not recur, highlighting safeguards put in place to prevent similar failures.
