Iranian Players Sing Anthem Amid Conflict at Asian Cup

During the Asian Cup match against host Australia, Iranian players sang their national anthem, a notable shift from their silence in the opening match against South Korea. This change occurred in the context of escalating conflict following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in Iran, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,100 Iranian civilians.

Striker Sara Didar expressed emotional sentiments about the separation from loved ones. Alireza Mohebbi, an Australia-based correspondent for Iran International TV, indicated that the players were likely instructed to sing, reflecting the Iranian regime's influence.

Head coach Marziyeh Jafari, in a news conference, insisted that the team was focused on football despite their 4-0 defeat to Australia. The Iranian men's team had previously remained silent during their first game against England in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but sang along in their next match against Wales.

The team is set to face the Philippines next, with hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
