ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh warning to the Federal Government of Nigeria, threatening a nationwide strike due to the perceived failure of both federal and state authorities to honor agreements reached in December 2025. This warning follows a crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Modibbo Adama University in Yola on May 9-10, 2026.

ASUU President Chris Piwuna expressed deep frustration over the government's lack of commitment to the agreements, which were initially met with optimism earlier in the year. The union highlighted that the government has not fully implemented the agreements, particularly the establishment of a monitoring committee to oversee the rollout.

ASUU also criticized the government's proposal for a new national research council, arguing it contradicts existing funding models. The union has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene before the situation spirals out of control, as unresolved grievances continue to threaten the academic calendar.
