ASUU Criticizes FG for Poor Implementation of Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), represented by National President Comrade Christoph Piwuna, expressed strong discontent regarding the Federal Government's (FG) implementation of the 2025 agreement. During a press conference in Yola, ASUU accused the FG of failing to inaugurate a monitoring committee, which has resulted in bureaucratic bottlenecks that hinder the agreement's actualization.

Piwuna stated that the agreement is rapidly losing its relevance due to the government's uncoordinated approach, allowing university administrations to selectively implement aspects of the agreement. He further criticized state governors for not honoring the agreement and called for both state and federal governments to respect the document's letter and spirit.

Additionally, ASUU opposed the FG's decision to propose a $500 million National Research and Innovation Fund without consulting the union, urging the government to allocate at least 1% of GDP for research and innovation development to protect Nigerian lives and property amidst increasing insecurity.
