ASUU Threatens Federal Government Over Breached Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning to the Federal Government regarding a potential industrial action due to the alleged breach of the December 2025 agreement. The union highlighted several unresolved issues, including the withholding of three and a half months' salaries, promotion arrears, and unremitted third-party deductions, which amount to 25-35 percent of wage awards.

This situation has led to significant frustration among academic staff, as expressed by ASUU President Prof. Christoph Piwuna during a communiqué following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Modibbo Adama University in Yola.

The union perceives the government's response as disinterested in the welfare of Nigerian academics, which has brewed pent-up anger and could lead to a new wave of industrial unrest if not addressed. ASUU has stated that it remains open to working with the government to resolve these outstanding issues and plans to convene an emergency NEC meeting in the coming weeks to review the situation and determine necessary actions.
