ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike if the Federal Government and state governments do not fulfill their commitments under the December 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. ASUU President Chris Piwuna expressed frustration over the government's handling of the agreement's implementation, accusing them of providing "lip service" to critical issues that were negotiated over eight months.

Piwuna highlighted that many provisions of the agreement remain unimplemented, leading to renewed frustration among university lecturers. A significant concern is the withholding of part of the salaries of lecturers affected by previous industrial actions, which has caused serious hardship.

While acknowledging that President Bola Tinubu's administration paid four months of the seven-and-a-half months of withheld salaries from the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari, Piwuna stated that the remaining three-and-a-half months are still unpaid, exacerbating the difficulties faced by lecturers amid challenging economic conditions. ASUU urges the government to complete the outstanding payments and insists on full implementation of the agreement.
