ASUU Threatens Action Over 2026 Agreement Delays

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning to the Federal Government regarding the delay in implementing the 2026 agreement, which includes the establishment of an Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC). Professor Abdulkadir Muhammad, the zonal coordinator for ASUU in the Kano zone, stated that the enthusiasm surrounding the agreement, unveiled on January 14, 2026, is diminishing due to the government's failure to honor its commitments.

The union criticized the fragmented and poorly coordinated implementation of the agreement, with only a few state governments adopting its provisions. ASUU also condemned the refusal of some state governors to implement salary components agreed upon in the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.

Furthermore, concerns were raised about the announcement made by Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa regarding the establishment of a National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF) without ASUU's involvement.

The union emphasized the need for the government to adhere strictly to the agreement to maintain industrial peace and harmony within Nigerian universities.
