ASUU Threatens Action Over Unfulfilled Salary Agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning to the federal and state governments regarding the non-implementation of agreements, particularly concerning the payment of withheld salaries and promotion arrears. During a press briefing following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, ASUU President Christoph Piwuna condemned the government's failure to amicably resolve these lingering issues.

He highlighted that the government has not fulfilled commitments made in December 2025, which has led to frustration among ASUU members. The union is particularly concerned about the withholding of three and a half months' salaries and the shortfall in salary payments due to third-party deductions.

Piwuna stated that the government's apparent disinterest in the welfare of Nigerian academics could lead to a new wave of industrial unrest if the situation is not addressed. ASUU's leadership remains open to working with the government to realize their demands, with plans for an emergency NEC meeting in the coming weeks to review the situation and determine necessary actions.
