iREP Festival Opens with Emmy-Nominated Film "Madu"

The iREP International Documentary Film Festival commenced with the screening of "Madu," directed by Joel Kachi Benson. This film marks a significant milestone in African documentary storytelling, focusing on Anthony Madu, a young Nigerian dancer whose 2020 viral video captivated millions.

The film, which has a runtime of 100 minutes, explores Madu's life and the cultural tensions he faces as he transitions between Nigeria and the UK, where he attends the Elmhurst Ballet School. It has garnered acclaim and is set for a global release in 2024, culminating in a 2025 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Arts and Culture Documentary, making Benson the first Nigerian to receive a nomination in this category.

The festival, held at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, aims to bridge the gap between veteran filmmakers and emerging talent, with support from Ecobank, which emphasizes the importance of storytelling in advancing African narratives.
