Adelabu Critiques DisCos for Investment Failures in Power

During a valedictory meeting in Abuja, Adebayo Adelabu, the former Minister of Power, expressed significant concern regarding electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and their failure to meet investment obligations since the sector's privatization in 2013. He urged the government to critically review the licenses of these companies when due, highlighting the necessity of ongoing reforms in Nigeria's power sector.

Adelabu emphasized that while the reforms may appear unpopular, they are essential for guaranteeing stable and efficient electricity supply to Nigerians. He called for civil servants to ensure the continuity of the ministry's foundational work in alignment with President Bola Tinubu's vision for reliable power delivery.

Adelabu noted that the reform process is a long-term journey that requires courage from technocrats and political leaders to establish a sound power sector value chain. He referenced key milestones, including the signing of the Electricity Act 2023, which aims to decentralize and liberalize the sector to enable sub-national participation.
