Adelabu Urges Continuity in Nigeria's Power Sector Reforms

Adebayo Adelabu, the immediate past Minister of Power, held a valedictory session on Thursday, urging for the continuity of reforms in Nigeria's power sector. He stressed the necessity of consistent policies designed to stabilize and efficiently supply electricity to Nigerians.

During the formal handover to the ministry's permanent secretary in Abuja, Adelabu charged top civil servants to ensure that the incoming minister builds on the existing foundations aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision for reliable power delivery. He acknowledged that while reforms may seem unpopular, they are essential for long-term success.

Adelabu noted key milestones, including the signing of the Electricity Act 2023 and the decentralization of the sector, which has allowed participation from 16 states. He expressed concern over the failure of distribution companies (DISCOs) to meet investment obligations since their privatization in 2013 and urged the government to review their licenses.

Adelabu confirmed his resignation to pursue a governorship position in Oyo State, recalling a similar move in 2019 when he resigned as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
