Opposition Leaders Meet in Abuja to Discuss Electoral Act

On a recent date, prominent opposition leaders, including Atiku, David Mark, and Obi, gathered in Abuja to discuss urgent issues concerning Nigeria's democracy. The meeting focused on the newly enacted 2026 Electoral Act, which has generated controversy following its passage by the National Assembly and subsequent assent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Although the President signed the amended law, opposition parties have expressed dissatisfaction with certain provisions, particularly those advocating for mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results directly from polling units. Critics, including opposition figures and civil society organizations, argue that these provisions could undermine electoral transparency, especially in cases of network failure that may necessitate manual result collation.

Other notable attendees included former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and Senator Dino Melaye, among others, representing Nigeria's major opposition political parties.
