Opposition Leaders Rally in Abuja Over 2026 Electoral Act

On a significant occasion in Abuja, key opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and former governors Rotimi Amaechi and Liyel Imoke, convened to discuss the implications of the recently enacted 2026 Electoral Act. This meeting, themed "Urgent Call to Save Nigeria's Democracy," was organized in response to the dissatisfaction expressed by opposition parties regarding the Act's provisions, particularly the absence of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results directly from polling units.

Despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's assent to the amendments, opposition parties, including the People's Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), argue that the current provisions could lead to manipulation and undermine electoral transparency. The leaders plan to outline their objections and propose amendments during a press conference, emphasizing the need for enhanced credibility in future elections.
