Opposition Leaders Reject Amended Electoral Act 2026

Opposition leaders in Nigeria, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and representatives from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have strongly rejected the recently amended Electoral Act 2026, which was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The opposition coalition criticized the legislative process in the National Assembly, describing it as defective and lacking transparency. Ajuri Ahm, a spokesperson for the NNPP, highlighted that data indicates electronic transmission of results is feasible across polling units nationwide, questioning why the law retains provisions for manual transmission despite technological capabilities.

The coalition further criticized the speed with which President Tinubu assented to the bill, noting that it did not receive similar urgency as other recent electoral matters, such as the conduct of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, which they argue failed to meet expectations.
